Known by many names and statuses, Beelzebub is a demon we see across many texts. Belzebut, Belzebuth, and Beelzeboul can all be found-and that’s not even the end of the list! Known for spreading belief in false gods, feeding the flames of war, and possessing humans to carry out horrid acts. In Demonolatry, we see more of a mentor and teacher.

These are not the only books that mention Beelzebub, just ones that I see referenced a lot for different reasons. These books aren’t centered on Beelzebub, they cover a lot of topics involving demons in general. As you can see in the list some are also just Bible verses that refer to Beelzebub. I see these texts referenced much more for general demonology than Demonolatry. There’s a focus on history and demonology than worship. Now if you’re looking for a book that goes over worship, I suggest checking out ‘The Complete Book of Demonolatry’ by S Connolly. Offhand I do not remember if this book covers Beelzebub specifically, but it is useful if you’re looking for something worship based! Also, it’s very well written and easy to understand!
Depictions
The most common depiction of Beelzebub in books or religious text would be a fly. Some other details are prominent and varied-such as cross bone figures on the wings-but the detail that is always the same is the Fly body. When it comes to a humanoid form seen by followers, I see a lot of people have different experiences with looks. I’d say this is almost dependent on the practitioner, and their interactions. This is normal for many demons, how they appear to each person can vary while some may have a more ‘normal’ form.
Common Information
What I found interesting about Beelzebub is there is certainly a lot of similarities-but there’s just as many differences! In the Old Testament he is simply a false god, Baal-zebub, Lord of Flies, which was seen as a false idol being worshiped. But zebub sounds very similar to zebal, which translates into “to make dung.” However, there is also the interpretation of “Lord of all that Fly’s.” This just expands the view from flies to flying things in general and is treated as more as a syntax deal. To make that make sense, I often see people describe it as that “Lord of Flies” is the direct translation, while “Lord of all that Fly’s” would be what’s communicated.
Now, once we enter the New Testament Baal-zebub now becomes Beelzebub, Chief of Demons. Then once we get to Matthew 12:24-27 Beelzebub is labeled as a Prince, which comes from being associated as another name for Satan-Prince of Devils. And this continues further, Charles Berbiguier lists him as THE Prince of Hell and is given the title “Supreme Chief of the Infernal Empire” and the Founder of the Order of the Fly.
In the Testament of Solomon, Beelzebub (under the name Beelzeboul) is seen as higher than other demons because he is an Angel himself, and not the child of one. This leads us to Watcher traditions, because this book refers to Beelzebub as the First Angel of the First Heaven, tying him to Azazel. In more modern views of Demonology, we see him tied to Lucifer in a similar way as well, because of the naming of demons in the Bible.
There is an amazing and in-depth lore behind him, it’s understandable why many people may disagree on his Rank, and other information such as if he is in fact a demon, Angel, a prince, or a demonized god of a prior religion. Depending on where you look, you’ll find some variation of the events and naming.
Taking all of this in account it makes sense why there’s a lot of variation with this Demon and interactions with practitioners. There are many different facets we get to see in Beelzebub as a figure through religious text and from a historical view, that I feel like we see translate over into the Demon Beelzebub we see today in modern Demonology and Demonolatry.
Interactions Towards Followers
Beelzebub is a protector. He is known to provide amazing protections and helps keep those who are under him safe. As such, he takes a particularly protective approach to those who align with him, showing them a strong and protective presence when his energy is around them. He can also seem commanding; he’s a strong warrior. He favors a curious mind and love for knowledge. It’s also said he is particularly skilled in death related magic and curses.
His link to disease comes from flies, which swarm the dead and spread their diseases to the living. The process of death and rebirth seems to be an interest of his, and a lot of followers turning to him to help with the rebirth of themselves.
Magic wise, he helps his followers with Death Magic, Curses, Hexes, Banishing, Cleansing, and Transformations. He sees the lines where Science and Magic are aligned and work together. That they are a part of each other and encourages his followers to do the same.
People also say they notice an influx of flies around them when it comes to signs from Beelzebub. I would say use your best judgment to discern between mundane and magical, as flies can be a pretty common pest in many areas. Other things I’ve seen linked to him are the intense desire of change, and wanderlust. Often seen as him trying to lead you to change.
Most of the time people describe Beelzebub as a mentor, who pushes them to grow their mind and body. He will push you to work for general self-improvement, treating your mind and body as things that need to be taken care of and nurtured. If you’re interested in the sciences at all you may also notice a more frequent push towards them, as he’s very often related to science and learning.
Common Offerings and Devotional Acts
Beelzebub seems to be happy with most food offerings but seems to love honey. Teas like Oolong seem to always be appreciated. Animal bones or other pieces, dead flies, and gold have been reported as good as well. As well as anything that is given with value (monetary, personal, sentimental). Most commonly for offerings I see things like wine, chocolate, myrrh, moldavite, smoky quarts, and metals like titanium.
Outside of physical offerings Shadow Work, journaling, self-care, and being on top of your studies can all be used as mindful acts of devotion. Meditation is also talked about a lot, as there’s a heavy push for having peace within yourself.
