Leviathan

Leviathan, similar to other demons, has a lot of intricate history through different texts and depictions. Depending on where you focus your reading, you’ll see a few things that can vary a little bit, but I’ll be going over these later on. There are some things that seem to vary a bit depending on the religion the book comes from, some texts having slightly different events, or some parables being taught to have different meanings.

Currently the word Leviathan is often used to describe large sea creatures, or very large animals in general. In popular media a good example would be the Leviathan’s in games like Subnautica. Leviathan is treated as a ‘class’ of large creature and applies to a multiple different species of large creature. Outside of this we see the word in literature very similarly, such as the following quote from Moby Dick:

“In the heart of the ocean, where the boundaries of land and sea dissolve into oblivion, lies the realm of the Leviathan, a creature of myth and legend, whose ancient wisdom and unfathomable depths hold the secrets of the universe.”

While mostly we’ll see the word used to describe something large in size, these are good examples of the use for large sea creatures/serpents.

Prominent Books and Text Mentioning Leviathan

Book of Job

Psalm 104

Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses

Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage

Depictions

Most commonly, Leviathan is referred to as a giant serpent, or sea creature. It’s mentioned in Psalm 104 Leviathan was created to sport with, though I have seen consistent explanation of this to mean to play with, frolic, and even splash. Less consistently there are claims this was sport hunting, and that Leviathan was a race of sea serpents made to be hunted.

Here is the sea, vast and wide,

teeming with creatures beyond number,

living things both great and small.

There the ships pass,

and Leviathan, which You formed to frolic there.

This is interesting when there is a story traced back to an 11th Century Rabbi, stating that there were actually two Leviathans created. However, once it was realized that if they procreate humans could stand no chance, the female Leviathan was killed to prevent this. This is interesting considering Leviathan has two forms they may present to people-masculine and feminine. Many believe the two forms stand for the two initial Leviathans, now as one though this is not heavily documented outside some online forums and groups.

I’ve seen some people say that Leviathan is the ‘Hellmouth’ though this is also a bit uncommon and seems to be more of a recent tie among followers. The hellmouth is the entrance to hell, usually depicted in old theater and artwork as a monster’s jaws. Some believe God created Leviathan for this purpose, instead of hunting or ‘splashing’ with. That his jaws are the true gate to hell, and if one where to find Leviathan and have him open his jaws they could travel through them. So mostly all depictions of Leviathan are of a large sea creature/sea serpent. In less consistent depictions Leviathan is hunted for sport or can be found to allow you entrance to hell.

Followers do report a humanoid figure to Leviathan when they have interactions (astral, dream, etc.) but this varies in not only look, but also gender. Typically, blue eyes are very common to see described for the humanoid figure regardless of gender expression. Some also report serpent like features such as slit pupils and scales while appearing human otherwise.

Common Information

Now, most writings of Leviathan are very similar. The minor details can vary, but most texts have about the same beginnings. Leviathan is a sea serpent created by God. But when we turn our heads to Demonolatry or other forms of worship, Leviathan is less of a hellmouth and more of a mirror.

When we look at worship, people see him as a Gatekeeper to the Void. Leviathan can unlock this path and inspire transformational journeys. Though transformation isn’t always enjoyable, and while better for us can be unpleasant to experience. Often times he does this with a lot of spiritual guidance in shadow work, easing you through the gauntlet of your mind. Accountability and growth are all you’ll have the option to do if you wish to seek Leviathan out for this.

Common Offerings and Devotional Acts and Interactions Towards Followers

Lord of the Abyss and Void, Leviathan is a great Demon when it comes with working on the subconscious and emotional states. He understands the complexities of emotions and the depth they have. Often times this means people with a need to heal will turn to him for help getting through these often-painful emotions. People usually quote Leviathan as a calm, but stern demonic figure, and many people describe him as soothing, and helpful. They tend to speak directly or in dreams and symbols. Many people quote Leviathan as a large help in their healing, self-care, and even things like therapy because his supportive yet stern nature holding them accountable.

Commonly I see people offer things that are associated with serpents or water. Water, the color blue, burning lavender incense. Often materials like aquamarine or platinum. Other items I’ve read and seen are things like seashells, sea salt, river rocks, sand, tea, coffee, shadow work, and even things like music (dark ambient and classical are the ones I see most often dedicated to them). Some people like to gift serpent like statues and such, or things that are more nautical in theme like compasses or telescopes. Many like to relate this to his guidance, seeing these as symbols.
